Frequently Asked Questions
How long has the Raptors been in existence?
The Toronto Raptors are an NBA franchise located in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors, along the Vancouver Grizzlies, joined the NBA in 1995 as an expansion team. In 2001-02 the Raptors became Canada's only NBA-based team, after the Grizzlies moved to Memphis.
The Raptors, based in Toronto, play their home games at Scotiabank Arena. The arena is also used by the Maple Leafs, the city's NHL team. The Raptors have appeared in the NBA playoffs 13 times since their founding, most recently in 2021, where they lost in 6 games to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs.
The Raptors made their first playoff appearance in 1999-2000. In the first round, the Raptors were swept by New York Knicks division rivals.
Fans were rare and few, and the team was not very exciting. There wasn't much to cheer for, or even watch, and nobody knew why. The team finally decided to change their image after years of mediocrity and made every effort to appeal to the public.
They hired an advertising agency in 2001 to create a strategy for marketing that would help them achieve national fame. They came up with the slogan "Hear us roar" using creative thinking.
They used the slogan because the team was in financial trouble at the time and wanted to make sure that everyone knew that they were selling out. They needed a catchy slogan and a great logo. This is where agency's creative genius shines. They combined the expression "hear us roar" and another popular saying, "never die." This became the official motto of the Toronto Raptors.
When was the Raptors' inaugural game?
The Raptors vs. New Jersey Nets was their first regular-season match at the SkyDome. Alvin Robertson scored the first point in franchise history, drawing 33,306 spectators. The Raptors beat the Nets, 94-79, thanks to contributions from Damon Stoudamire (10 assists and 10 points) and Robertson (30 point plays).
Who are the five top Raptors per game scorers from Raptors history?
Kawhi Leonard has the highest scoring player on the team with 26.6 points per contest. Vince Carter is next with 23.4 points per minute, Mike James with 20.3, Chris Bosh at 20.2, Chris Bosh and DeMar DeRozan are following with 20.3 points each game.
How many Toronto Raptors have had all-stars?
Vince Carter (Vince Carter), Antonio Davis, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry are all Raptors All-Stars. Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, Fred VanVleet, DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard are also Raptors All Stars. Out of these players creating this impressive All-Star team lineup, except Davis and VanVleet, they have all made other NBA teams, such as Leonard, into the All-NBA Defensive team.
Did Vancouver have an NBA team?
Vancouver does NOT have a NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies played in Vancouver from 1995-2001. The team relocated to Memphis Tennessee in 2001. Vancouver's basketball community supports the Toronto Raptors because they are the closest NBA team. Additionally, there are other professional basketball clubs that play in the Greater Vancouver Area. These include the BC Tigers from the Canadian Elite Basketball League as well as the Vancouver Volcanoes from the International Basketball League. Numerous amateur and semiprofessional basketball teams participate in various local leagues.
Vancouver is home to many other sports fans. Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association aims to help former players connect with each other, and raise awareness about the game in British Columbia. It hosts clinics and viewing parties at Raptors games.
The city's love of basketball has not decreased since the departures of the Grizzlies. And it continues to be a supportive community in numerous ways. Vancouverites are still passionate about basketball and continue to support the many initiatives of former players and other organizations that promote basketball in the city.
